A high-level delegation led by Robert H. Touthang, Regional Director, NCDC, Guwahati, met senior officials of the Assam Government to discuss strengthening the state’s fisheries sector through cooperative-led development initiatives.
During the meeting, the NCDC team briefed Additional Chief Secretary (Fisheries) K. C. Samria, Additional Secretary Prashanta Barkakoty, Director of Fisheries Gauri Shankar Das and other officials on NCDC’s schemes, activities and developmental interventions in Assam. Discussions centred on expanding cooperative initiatives and harnessing the state’s vast fisheries potential through a comprehensive value chain approach.
A key focus of the deliberations was the proposed launch of an Integrated Fisheries Development Project (IFDP) under PMMSY-II. The project aims to promote sustainable fisheries development by integrating production, processing, marketing and value addition under a unified framework.
NCDC assured the state government of technical assistance and support in preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the initiative. The proposed collaboration is expected to strengthen fisheries cooperatives, improve infrastructure and create better livelihood opportunities for fish farmers across Assam.
