Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah extended greetings to the nation on the occasion of the International Cooperative Day, describing cooperation as the foundation of India’s culture, collective strength and self-reliance.
In a tweet Shah said the cooperative movement has received unprecedented momentum under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with the Ministry of Cooperation driving reforms aimed at modernising and expanding the sector.
Shah highlighted major initiatives undertaken in recent years, including the establishment of the Tribhuvan Cooperative University, creation of modern training centres and the expansion of cooperative institutions into emerging sectors.
He said these efforts are strengthening the vision of “Sahkar Se Samriddhi” (Prosperity through Cooperation) by empowering farmers, women, small entrepreneurs and workers, while making cooperatives engines of inclusive economic growth.
The Minister noted that the government is working to transform cooperatives through technology, professional management and greater participation of youth and women. Recent initiatives have also focused on strengthening Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS), digital cooperatives, farmer welfare, grain storage, dairy and fisheries cooperatives, and AI-enabled services as part of a broader strategy to make the sector more vibrant and future-ready.
The message comes as Cooperative Week 2026 is being observed across the country from June 29 to July 6, marking the fifth foundation anniversary of the Ministry of Cooperation. The nationwide celebrations showcase the achievements of the cooperative movement and promote greater public participation through activities organised by cooperative institutions at the national, state, district and village levels.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening the cooperative ecosystem, Shah said the sector continues to play a crucial role in building a self-reliant and developed India by creating sustainable livelihoods, enhancing rural prosperity and ensuring that the benefits of economic growth reach every section of society.
