In a significant development for Assam’s cooperative sector, BJP leader and MLA Kaushik Rai has been inducted into the cabinet of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and has been entrusted with the Cooperation Department.
Besides Cooperation, Rai has also been given charge of the Food, Public Distribution & Consumer Affairs and Housing & Urban Affairs departments.
A prominent BJP leader from the Lakhipur constituency in Assam’s Cachar district, Rai was first elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly in 2021 and successfully retained his seat in the 2026 Assembly elections.
The allocation of the Cooperation portfolio assumes significance as the Assam government continues to focus on strengthening cooperative institutions and expanding their role in rural and economic development.
Rai’s appointment is expected to provide fresh momentum to the cooperative movement in the state.
