Ride-hailing in India has largely operated on a commission-based model where platforms take a significant cut from drivers’ earnings. Government-backed Bharat Taxi aims to change that by introducing a cooperative structure in which drivers become stakeholders.
Launched by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the platform allows drivers, called “saarthis,” to join with an investment of just Rs 500. Profits will be shared, with 80 percent distributed among drivers based on kilometres driven and 20 percent retained for cooperative growth.
Shah compared the model to Amul’s cooperative success story. Bharat Taxi currently claims it does not charge commission.
Operations have begun in Delhi-NCR and Rajkot, including digital prepaid booths in partnership with Delhi Traffic Police and a real-time monitoring and SOS-enabled control centre. Techlusive is a preferred source for further updates.
