The International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) has unveiled a new Communications Strategy urging the global cooperative movement to strengthen its voice, expand its influence and communicate its impact more effectively.
The strategy highlights that despite offering a proven, democratic and values-based economic model, cooperatives remain poorly understood outside their own movement. Often overshadowed by dominant capitalist models, the cooperative approach continues to face challenges in gaining wider recognition and visibility.
Developed by the ICA communications team, the strategy seeks to elevate communications to the governance level, positioning it as a key function for strengthening legitimacy, influence and the long-term standing of the cooperative movement.
Designed as a practical tool, it aims to help ICA regions, sectors, committees and members communicate through a consistent narrative and a recognisable identity. It also seeks to ensure that the social and economic impact of cooperation is communicated more effectively across different audiences and geographies.
The strategy calls on cooperatives worldwide to speak with greater clarity and confidence about their achievements, values and contributions, while maintaining their independence. Its central message, “Speak up and scale up!”, reflects the need for a more coordinated and visible global cooperative voice.
