Former RBI Central Board Director and Sahakar Bharati founder member Satish Marathe has called for a region-specific development strategy for the Himalayan states, stressing that connectivity, agriculture, livelihoods and economic opportunities must reflect the unique realities of the region.
Speaking at the Himalaya Commons Dialogue 2026, where he delivered the opening remarks, Marathe highlighted the need to extend optical fibre and digital connectivity across the Himalayan ranges on a parity basis.
He advocated greater focus on region-specific agriculture and horticulture, instead of applying a uniform development model, and called for revival of small agro-processing units with sustained financial and institutional support.
Marathe also emphasised strengthening Primary Agricultural and Fisheries Cooperative Societies at the grassroots and developing local skills around viable rural livelihood activities.
He further suggested linking social organisations with government institutions to unlock opportunities through the Social Stock Exchange, while calling for stronger institutional mechanisms to address the distinct needs of Himalayan communities.
