Amul Managing Director Jayen Mehta has highlighted the vast growth potential of India’s dairy sector, stressing the need to balance premiumisation with affordability and greater formalisation of the market in an ET program.
Speaking at a discussion on “The New India Blueprint: Cities, Consumers, and the Business of Aspiration”, Mehta said the shift towards premium dairy products is clearly underway, but businesses must also focus on consumers at the bottom of the pyramid. He pointed to the enormous opportunity in moving consumers from loose to packaged and branded dairy.
Mehta said even a 5% annual shift from loose to packaged and branded dairy could bring around 3.5 crore litres of milk a day into the formal sector. He also underlined growing consumer interest in protein, wellness and integrated nutrition solutions.
Emphasising the scale of the opportunity, Mehta said India could support “one Amul” being added every year, reflecting the enormous potential of the country’s dairy market.
