Bhartiya Beej Sahakari Samiti Limited (BBSSL) has introduced seeds of 18 crops and 124 varieties under its ‘Bharat Beej’ brand, significantly expanding the availability of quality seeds across the country. The information was shared by Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

BBSSL distributes seeds through its extensive network of cooperative societies, private distributors and dealers, besides State Seed Federations and Seed Corporations under various government schemes. To strengthen its nationwide distribution programme, the apex cooperative has appointed region-wise Zonal Managers and Coordinators, including officials for Maharashtra and Dadra & Nagar Haveli.

In Maharashtra, BBSSL has supplied fodder crop, cotton, sorghum and groundnut seeds through the State Government under Centrally Sponsored Schemes such as NMEO-OS, NFSNM and the Kapas Kranti Mission, while wheat and gram seeds are distributed through private channels.

In Dadra & Nagar Haveli, the Department of Agriculture has been designated as the nodal agency. BBSSL serves as the apex cooperative for seed production, processing, branding, marketing, R&D and preservation of indigenous seed varieties.
