In a major boost to Bihar’s cooperative sugar sector, the State Cabinet has approved the establishment of two new cooperative sugar mills at the campuses of the closed sugar mills in Raiyam (Darbhanga) and Sakri (Madhubani). Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to lay the foundation stones of both projects on November 20.
The proposed mills will be operated by the state’s Cooperative Department as part of the government’s broader plan to revive the sugar industry and strengthen the rural economy.
The initiative is expected to generate employment, expand sugarcane cultivation and improve farmers’ incomes.
The Cabinet approval follows months of groundwork, including preparation of detailed project reports and mobilisation of sugarcane farmers through cooperative societies in the command areas of both mills.
The revival of closed cooperative sugar mills has been a key commitment of both the Centre and the state government to strengthen the cooperative movement and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for farmers.
