The Centre has informed Parliament that no proposal has been received for setting up a cooperative sugar mill in Tendukheda Assembly constituency of Madhya Pradesh’s Narsinghpur district, despite the area’s potential for sugarcane cultivation.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah said the Government is aware that there is no cooperative sugar mill in the constituency. However, eight private sugar mills are currently operational in Narsinghpur district, including two located in Tendukheda.

The Minister clarified that the Central Government does not establish cooperative sugar mills, noting that the sugar industry was delicensed in 1998 and no longer requires compulsory licensing.

Shah added that while there is no proposal under consideration for a cooperative sugar mill in Tendukheda, the Ministry of Cooperation continues to support the revival and modernisation of cooperative sugar mills across the country.

He said the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) provides financial assistance for viable revival and modernisation projects, either directly to cooperative sugar mills or through state governments, subject to due diligence and compliance with NCDC guidelines.
