UN Report fails to mention ICA role even once
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The United Nations Secretariat has published a note summarizing cooperative activities with UN entities and international organizations but has conveniently forgotten to take the name of International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) even once in its detailed report.

Some of the actors  who are putting in efforts to achieve SDG Goals by 2030 as listed in UN Report include -UNFCCC, FAO, ILO, UNEP, Partnership, Multilateral Environmental Agreement Body, UN Programme, Agency or Fund, UN Secretariat, UN-DESA, National Government. Not even once does it mention ICA.

The note was prepared in order to advance discussions at the 48th session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice, convening during the UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn, Germany.

The document provides information on cooperative activities, initiatives and programmes. On the relationship with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the document explains that the 2030 Agenda recognizes the UNFCCC as the primary forum for negotiating the global response to climate change, and that the UNFCCC Secretariat can help countries achieve the SDGs.

It describes UNFCCC activities towards SDG implementation, focusing mainly on SDG 13 (climate action), as well as engagement with activities and relevant agencies for achieving SDGs 2 (zero hunger), 4 (quality education), 5 (gender equality), 6 (clean water and sanitation), 7 (affordable and clean energy), 9 (industry, innovation and infrastructure), 11 (sustainable cities and communities) and 15 (life on land).

The document showcases the UNFCCC’s collaborations on achieving the SDGs with UNEP, FAO and ILO, among others but not with ICA.

On mitigation-related cooperative activities, the note highlights implementation of nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and the role of the NDC Partnership, which supports developing countries in implementing their NDCs and achieving the SDGs.

On technology, the note outlines cooperation related to, inter alia, the technology facilitation mechanism to support implementation of the SDGs. The note also describes cooperative activities related to climate finance, capacity building, adaptation and action for climate empowerment.

The document highlights the UNFCCC’s role in identifying knowledge gaps around agriculture and fisheries that hinder implementation and scaling up of adaptation.

On ensuring women’s participation and equal opportunities for leadership, the document references knowledge resources on gender-sensitive approaches and tools for adaptation.

The document also describes expanding international cooperation and capacity-building support in water- and sanitation-related activities and programmes.

I.C.A. should bring out its standing vis a vis UN and justify its relevance to cooperative movement with wide publicity.
