Co-operators greet each other on International Day of Cooperatives

Cooperative bodies from across the world from ICA to ILO to NCUI are celebrating July 4 (today) as this year’s International Day of Cooperatives. On this occasion ICA is showcasing cooperatives around the world which are taking action against climate change.

Climate change being the theme of this year’s International Day of Cooperatives, co-op bodies are organizing massive awareness campaigns through various artforms such as painting competitions, etc.

ICA’s tweet on occasion reads “For CoopsDay, we are proud to showcase cooperatives around the world who are taking action against climate change. Starting with @KIUC  – did you know that in Kauai, 56% of fuel needs are met with renewables?”

On this occasion ILO Director-General Guy Ryder issued a statement saying the 2020 International Day of Cooperatives is marked on Saturday 4 July under the theme “Cooperatives for Climate Action” which is closely linked to SDG13.

“This year’s International Day of Cooperatives gives me the opportunity and it’s very welcome to do two things. Firstly, to underline the strong and historic links which bind the ILO and the global cooperative movement.

100 years ago this year the ILO established its Cooperative Unit. Our first Director, Albert Thomas, was a prominent cooperativist. And to this day the ILO remains the only part of the United Nations system with an explicit mandate on cooperatives.

We take that mandate very seriously. It’s referenced in the ILO Centenary Declaration for the Future of Work that was adopted by the International Labour Conference last year. And it is of the utmost importance in the conditions of crisis into which the COVID-19 pandemic has plunged the world of work today”, ILO DG underlined.

NCUI and ICA AP has also jointly organized a webinar on the occasion which will start from 11 AM today and will be inaugurated by former Union Minister Suresh Prabhu.

NCUI President Chandra Pal Singh Yadav has issued a statement on the day detailing co-operative fight against Climate change.

IFFCO MD Dr U S Awasthi tweeted to say “I am glad to share that for the Celebration of International Day of Cooperatives on 4th July 2020, I will be the Keynote speaker in a NCUI-ICAAP webinar on Cooperatives for Climate Action. Will share my experiences & efforts of #IFFCO for the environment.”

NAFCUB President Jyotindra Mehta has also taken to social media to declare “Proudly Cooperative”.

GH Amin, senior co-operator from Gujarat and Vice-President of NCUI has also conveyed his greetings on the day. Dileep Sanghani, President of NAFSCOB has also expressed his wishes to fellow co-operators on the day.
