UP: Maya hikes sugarcane price to Rs 250/quintal

With state assembly election looming close, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has doled out a surprise gift to farmers by hiking the State Advisory Price (SAP) of sugarcane up to Rs 250 per quintal.
The SAP for last year was pegged at Rs 210. With big jump in price more than 40 lakh farmers are going to benefit from this raise.
Accusing Centre of being hopelessly out of tune with the time she rubbished its procurement price of Rs145 per quintal as unrealistic.
Uttar Pradesh is the largest producer of sugarcane in the country and with bumber crop of sugarcane this election year; Mayawati obviously does not want to take any chance.
She also said that crushing would start soon and has instructed officials to purchase sugarcane sooner than later so that farmers get their fields for next crop
