Igniting co-op movement: NCUI focusses on East Zone states

NCUI organized a webinar for the East Zone States comprising Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand & Sikkim on the theme “Problems/Challenges and Achievements of the Cooperatives” recently.

Inaugurating the webinar President NCUI Dileep Sanghani said the objective of organizing such events is to understand the problems faced by the grassroots cooperatives across states and offer recommendations for strengthening the cooperative movement.

Sanghani hoped the creation of the new ministry of cooperation under the dynamic leadership of Amit Shah would enable the cooperative movement to reach newer heights. Eminent co-operators, senior govt. officials, officials from NABARD, NCDC, RCS offices, Banks, State Cooperative Unions, Federations and staff and officers of NCUI Coop. Education Field Projects were virtually in attendance at the inaugural function.

Speaking in the webinar, Dr Sudhir Mahajan, Chief Executive, NCUI praised the noteworthy achievements of a number of cooperatives in the Eastern region and stressed that the successful models need to be replicated by other cooperatives in the region.

Mahajan also shed light on the new initiatives of NCUI like undertaking a study on the contribution of cooperatives in GDP, starting NCUI Haat, holding a Cooperative Fair on the occasion of Cooperative Week, the opening of Skill Development Center soon, etc.

He further emphasized the need for professionalism and technology up-gradation by the cooperatives in the region so that they can compete in the market economy successfully.  He said that the recommendations of the webinar will be submitted to the Ministry and other agencies.

A number of eminent panellists comprising MDs of concerned State Cooperative Unions, representatives of RCS’s offices, NABARD and NCDC took part in the deliberations and shared their views. Some of them were Phadung Bhutia, Chief Executive Officer, Sikkim State Cooperative Union, R P Singh, MD, BISCOMAUN, Brahmanand Parida, Secretary, Orissa State Cooperative Union, Rakesh Kumar Singh, State Monitoring Officer, Registrar’s Office, Jharkhand, Vikas Upadhyay, Regional Director, NCDC, Kolkatta.

The program was moderated by Ramesh Kaul, Dy Director, GCP, and a vote of thanks was given by Dr. K.N. Sinha, Executive Director, GCP.
