Will Bijender say good-bye to NAFED today?

NAFED Board is meeting today. According to sources Bijender Singh, the Chairman is likely to tender his resignation. Will it be accepted or not is known only to Board members.

According to information available with Indian cooperative.com, in the tussle between Nafed Board and agriculture ministry a patch up formula was worked out wherein Bijender’s departure was agreed upon. Nafed bail out drama had two main actors – C V Anand Bose and Bijender Singh. Anand Bose, having been promoted to the rank of secretary is already gone. Now it is Bijender’s turn.

But being a seasoned politician Bijender has played his cards very well so far. He tendered his resignation to the Ministry which asked it to do the same before the board. Nafed board has members close to Bijender who may not oblige him and so the motion of resignation would be there with no result for the Ministry.

Readers may be aware that tie-up losses of Nafed prompted Agriculture Ministry to send C V Anand Bose as MD in Nafed to clean up the mess. A few months down the line he became unpopular with members who sacked him arbitrarily despite ministry’s strong protest.

Earlier, Nafed held a Special General Meeting on 25th January, 2010 for arranging finance. Bye-laws of Nafed were amended in this meeting to strengthen the share capital base and the same was registered by the Central Registrar. Nafed requested the Chief Executives of member organizations to send additional share capital amount as applicable in their respective cases. No body paid a pai thinking it is a sinking boat.

According to Multi State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002 members can exercise rights only if due payments are made. Now it is Central registrar’s call to find out the truth and enforce the law of the land. Are those voting have right to vote?
