American scholar attempts a study on Nafed

An American female scholar Prof Any recently visited Nafed to learn about the cooperative’s relationship with farmers . The focus of her inquiry was to do a comparative study on the gains of farmers in India and USA.

The professor met Managing Director of Nafed, Sanjiv Chaddha as well as the government nominee Ashok Thakur.

Briefing this reporter on American academic’s visit, Ashok Thakur said in the wake of companies like Wal-Mart and others trying to enter Indian market big time professor Any wanted to find out which model would suit farmers most.

While companies like Wal-Mart shares just 10 percent of its profit with the farmers, a cooperative like Nafed which is owned by farmers boasts a much higher profit through its successful operations, Thakur said.

Professor is said to have interacted extensively with the Nafed top officials trying to understand its operations. She was leading a delegation that included Asst Prof Umesh as a member as well.

The agri-cooperative is experiencing a turnaround in recent days due to liberal support extended to it by the NDA govt. The Centre gave Rs 700 crore to Nafed to procure agri-produce from farmers recently.

Earlier, it earned a handsome profit of Rs 125 crore and the Board members thanked the Modi govt for standing by it. If Nafed leaders are to be believed, the revival package for the beleaguered cooperative is also in the final stage of approval.
