The MD of largest farmers’ cooperative has hailed the Indian Prime Minister’s proposal of setting up a BRICS Agriculture Research Centre. Addressing the Plenary session of the BRICS Business Council , PM Narendra Modi had proposed a BRICS Agriculture Research Centre and said ‘it would be a big gift to the world.”

Lending his support to the idea Dr. U S Awasthi tweeted “#IFFCO completely agree with #PM @narendramodi @PMOIndia for proposing a BRICS Agriculture Research Centre, 2 cater global food security.

Modi’s idea has since been supported by many experts who say India, China and Brazil together form the largest agricultural research community claiming nearly 150 thousand scientists and technicians with an annual budget of more than 6 Billion USD.

Together they dwarf, many feel, even the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) the only International Agricultural Research System.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday proposed a 10-point agenda to accelerate growth in the major economies of Brazil, Russia, India China and South Africa (BRICS), which in turn will help the global economy come out of a slump.

Besides BRICS Agriculture Research Centre, proposal for BRICS Railways Research Center and Supreme Audit Institutions, BRICS sports Council and BRICS Film Festival were also mooted. Modi also proposed an annual BRICS Trade Fair and said India would be pleased to host the first Trade Fair.
