Making Co-op Principles contemporary

The Seven Cooperative Principles all cooperatives swear by globally and which came in handy to the Supreme Court of India in disposing an important case of Vipul Chaudhary vs Gujarat State recently- is going to be the focus of the Alliance Global Conference in Antalya.

An ICA source is quoted as saying all co-operators know the seven principles – but how to apply them in the day to day functioning is important. The ICA is encouraging cooperators globally to Join the Alliance Global Conference in Antalya and learn from the presentation of the highly anticipated Guidance Notes for the Co-operative Principles.

Two top cooperators- Jean-Louis Bancel (Chair of the Alliance Principles Committee, Alliance Board Member and President of Crédit Coopératif) and David Rodgers (Editor of the Guidance Notes and Councillor of the London Borough of Ealing) will share the results of their work done on the subject and discuss how the Notes take the movement forward towards 2020.

The Guidance Notes serve as interpretation aids for the Co-operative Principles, bringing them into contemporary terms and further establishing the irreducible core of the co-operative identity.

The global conference is scheduled to take place in November 2015 in Antalya in Turkey. The Alliance’s Global Conference will feature a keynote speech from author and academic Yochai Benkler of “The Wealth of Networks” fame. Another keynote speaker would be Ms Kathy Bardswick who will be speaking on “Ensuring reliable sources for co-operative capital” at ‘Towards 2020’.

Acclaimed author and opinion leader Raj Patel is also going to speak at the Alliance Towards 2020 Conference. Patel continuously challenges presumptions about the global economy with his work both as a policy analyst and activist. Having worked for some of the most prestigious international organizations, Patel constantly finds ways to improve the world’s food system.
