Milma the milk marketing body in Kerala would soon hike the milk price. Its central and southern zones, two of its three regions, are already facing scarcity of milk.
Ernakulam Regional Cooperative Milk Producers Union (ERCMPU) has recommended a hike of Rs 5 per litre for toned milk. At present, a litre Milma milk is priced at Rs 35.
Official sources say, milk procurement is on the decline in the state. Usually we buy milk from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka at a higher price. Now flow of milk from these areas has sharply gone down following the outbreak of foot and mouth disease among dairy cattle.
