TANFED elects Murugan as Chairman

tanfedEllappatty M Murugan has been elected new President of Tamil Nadu Cooperative Marketing Federation popularly known as “TANFED”. He was President in-charge after D. Johnthangam decided to contest Lok Sabha election. But in the recently held election Mr Murugan was elected President unopposed.

The election has practically taken place after a gap of 15 years as Johnthangam stayed in his chair just for six months. Murugan is a veteran cooperator who was earlier served as Vice-Chairman of Tanfed. He hails from Theni district of Tamil Nadu. A total of 21 directors are there in Tanfed Board which was elected by about 111 delegates.

From the inception (i.e.1959) till June 1976, there was elected board of Management. Subsequently, from November 1998 to June 2001 TANFED functioned under the elected Board of Management. Then it came under the control of Special Officer who headed it till July 2013.

Last year’s election threw up Johnthangam as the Chairman who left midway in search of political destination. From July 2013, however Tanfed has been functioning under the elected Board of Management.

Its job revolves around providing market support to the affiliated member Co-operative Marketing Societies in procuring, storing and marketing of agricultural commodities and is also member of several national level federations.

It also identifies the agricultural input requirements of the farmers and arrange for storage and distribution of Fertilisers, Seeds, Pesticides and Agricultural Implements through Co-operative outlets.

It goes to the credit of Amma that she has finally got cooperative elections conducted in the state after a long  gap endorsing the adage “All well that ends well”.
