Punjab: Co-op to handle Atta-Dal scheme

The state of Punjab would leverage the cooperative network in the state for distribution of wheat to beneficiaries dispensing with the role of fair price outlets.

A yearly amount of 60 kg grain would be given to the deserving people at one go under the Atta-Dal scheme, claimed Mr. Grewal.

According to Grewal, this would be modeled on how Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have handled it. The new scheme would introduce honesty and fairness in the distribution of foodgrain, remarked Grewal.

Official sources say under the new scheme beneficiaries will hold blue cards and avail themselves of their share of fresh crop without facing any difficulties.

However, the new scheme has caused anger among thousands of fair price shop owners as they fear losing the prospects of making monetary gains.

A new wave of policy change in the distribution of foodgrain observers say is sweeping through the country.
