Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a strong endorsement to Nano Urea and domestic fertiliser production, calling it a critical step toward meeting India’s future agricultural needs and strengthening the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Speaking at the News18 Rising Bharat Summit, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of reducing import dependence and promoting innovative, indigenous solutions such as Nano Urea to empower farmers and safeguard the environment.
Describing Nano Urea as a transformative innovation, the Prime Minister underlined that encouraging domestic fertiliser production along with next-generation products would not only enhance productivity but also reduce costs and environmental stress.
His remarks were seen as a major policy push for nano fertilisers, aligning agricultural growth with sustainability goals. The endorsement signals the Centre’s continued commitment to technological interventions that improve soil health, cut logistics burdens, and boost farmer incomes.
Responding to the Prime Minister’s remarks, Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) welcomed the encouragement and reiterated its resolve to advance nano fertilisers as a pillar of self-reliant agriculture.
IFFCO has been at the forefront of nano fertiliser research and commercialisation, launching the world’s first Nano Urea (Liquid) in 2021 after extensive field trials across thousands of locations. The 500 ml bottle of Nano Urea is designed to replace a conventional 45 kg bag of granular urea, significantly reducing storage, transportation, and application challenges.
According to IFFCO’s published progress reports, Nano Urea has been tested on more than 90 crops in over 11,000 field trials, demonstrating yield improvements and reduced chemical load on soil.
The cooperative has established large-scale production facilities at Aonla and Phulpur in Uttar Pradesh and Kalol in Gujarat, with a combined annual capacity of several crore bottles. These plants are equipped with advanced nano-technology labs and automated filling systems to ensure quality and scalability.
IFFCO has also expanded its nano portfolio by introducing Nano DAP (Liquid), further strengthening its efforts to modernise plant nutrition. The company reports that nano fertilisers help reduce nitrogen losses, improve nutrient use efficiency, and lower groundwater contamination.
By promoting targeted foliar application, Nano Urea aims to curb excessive use of conventional urea, which has long been associated with soil degradation and air pollution due to volatilisation.
The Prime Minister’s public support is expected to accelerate awareness campaigns and farmer outreach initiatives. IFFCO has already partnered with state governments, Krishi Vigyan Kendras, and cooperatives to conduct demonstrations and training sessions. The focus now is on ensuring that every farmer understands the benefits, dosage, and correct method of application so that both productivity and environmental gains can be maximised.
As India moves toward sustainable intensification of agriculture, Nano Urea is emerging as a symbol of indigenous innovation backed by political will. With the Prime Minister’s clear “thumbs up” at a national platform, stakeholders believe the momentum behind nano fertilisers will grow stronger, helping farmers reduce input costs while protecting soil, water, and air.
