A new 75 MTPD cow dung–based biogas plant will be set up in Banaskantha district following the signing of a tripartite agreement between the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), Banas Milk Union (Banas Dairy), and Suzuki Research and Development Institute.
The agreement was signed during the inauguration of a 100 MTPD Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant at Bukhala village in Banaskantha by the Governor of Gujarat, Acharya Devvrat. The event marked a key milestone in the state’s efforts to expand clean energy capacity through the cooperative sector.
The memorandum of understanding was executed by Sangram Chaudhari, Managing Director, Banas Milk Union; Kenichiro Toyofuku, Director, Suzuki R&D Centre India Private Limited; and Shashikumar B N, Group Head (ES), NDDB.
The signing took place in the presence of the Speaker of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly and Chairman of Banas Milk Union, Shankar Chaudhary, and the Minister for Agriculture, Government of Gujarat, Jitu Vaghani, along with senior officials from the dairy, cooperative and energy sectors.
The proposed biogas plant will utilise cow dung sourced from the cooperative dairy network, converting dairy waste into compressed biogas and high-quality organic manure. The project is expected to support clean energy generation, strengthen waste management systems, and create additional income opportunities for dairy farmers, contributing to improved rural livelihoods.
The collaboration underscores NDDB’s continued focus on sustainable development and promotion of the circular economy by combining cooperative institutions with advanced technology. Through partnerships with milk unions and technology providers, NDDB aims to scale up biogas production while supporting climate action and national energy security.
NDDB is working with cooperative milk unions across the country by providing technical expertise and consultancy services for setting up compressed biogas plants, aligned with national objectives of farmer income enhancement, efficient waste utilisation, and the priorities of the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying and the Ministry of Cooperation.
