During the passage of the Multi-State Cooperative Societies (Amendment) Bill, 2022, some of the Lok Sabha MPs briefly highlighted several provisions, which will bring transparency in the work of cooperatives.

Lok Sabha member Manoj Kishorbhai Kotak in his remarks said, “There are around 8 lakh cooperative societies in the country. Many new reforms have been brought in to strengthen the cooperative movement in the country. The MSCS Amendment bill would curb scams in co-ops”.

“Several important provisions have been made for bringing transparency in the activities of co-ops. The appointment of Co-operative Information Officer for providing information to the members about the affairs and management of the society, for the revival of co-ops, the establishment of Co-operative Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Fund are the key changes that have been made in the MSCS (Amendment) Bill.

Another MP, Sri Krishna Devarayalu Lavu’s said, “Cooperative Movement is the backbone of the country. It plays a vital role in developing the rural economy. The establishment of cooperative election authority will bring in transparency in the election.

Lok Sabha member Ram Shiromani Verma welcomed the Multi-State Cooperative Societies (Amendment) Bill, 2022. “The bill will provide a reservation of seats one each for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and women in the board of the cooperative society. I endorse the provisions of the bill”, he added.

It bears recalling that amidst sloganeering by Opposition MPs on the Manipur issue in the House, the Multi-State Co-operative Societies (Amendment) Bill, 2022 aimed at amending the Multi-State Co-operative Societies Act, 2002 has been passed in Lok Sabha with a voice vote Tuesday evening.

During the discussion on the Multi-State Co-operative Societies (Amendment) Bill, 2022, Lok Sabha member Santosh Kumar Gangwar said, “Since the birth of the cooperative movement, different political parties have used the movement as a source of political benefits and have harmed the movement. But after the formation of the BJP government, the new ministry for cooperation has been constituted for strengthening the movement”.

“The bill will bring in transparency. Several provisions like Cooperative Information Officer and Ombudsman are beneficial for the cooperative movement. Now, the cooperative movement will gain new dimensions in the country”, he added.

Opposition parties kept shouting through the speech of Amit Shah on the issue of Manipur  which led Shah to say that at the end of his speech that BJP govt is ready to discuss every issue including Manipur but we need to create a conducive atmosphere for the same.

He also alleged that Opposition Parties are not paying attention to an important Bill aimed at removing poverty from the country. “They have been talking about removing poverty but in reality they want to remove poor”, he said satirically referring to Congress.
