Krishan Pal Gurjar chaired a high-level review meeting on the implementation of the National Cooperation Policy 2025, with a special focus on the development of Tribhuvan Sahkari University (TSU). The meeting was held on Friday, at Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Cooperation participated in the meeting, including Anand Kumar Jha. Representatives of Tribhuvan Sahkari University joined the deliberations virtually. The discussions centred on reviewing the progress made so far and accelerating initiatives required for the operationalisation and development of the proposed university.

Officials said the university is envisioned as a premier institution dedicated to cooperative education, research and training. The project forms an important pillar of the government’s broader push to strengthen India’s cooperative sector under the guiding vision of “Sahkar se Samriddhi” (Prosperity through Cooperation).

During the meeting, Gurjar emphasised the need to develop a strong institutional framework that can support cooperatives with professional training, modern management practices and research-driven policy inputs. He noted that strengthening the cooperative ecosystem requires a new generation of trained professionals who understand both grassroots cooperative structures and emerging economic opportunities.

Tribhuvan Sahkari University is expected to play a critical role in building this human resource base. Once operational, the institution will focus on specialised courses in cooperative management, rural finance, agri-business, cooperative law and digital governance. It is also expected to collaborate with existing cooperative institutions, universities and training centres to expand knowledge-sharing and capacity-building initiatives.

Officials reviewing the project also discussed the academic structure, partnerships and phased development of the university. The institution is expected to serve as a national hub for research and innovation in the cooperative sector, supporting policymakers, cooperative leaders and entrepreneurs working in rural and agricultural economies.

Experts believe the university could significantly enhance professional capacity in India’s cooperative movement, which includes thousands of cooperative banks, dairy unions, farmer producer organisations and credit societies across the country. By combining academic learning with field-based training, TSU is expected to prepare future leaders for the sector.

The meeting concluded with directions to accelerate the implementation roadmap and ensure timely progress on the establishment of the university. The Ministry reiterated that strengthening education and training infrastructure is essential for modernising the cooperative movement and expanding its role in rural development and economic growth.
