Jharkhand: Signs of awakening of co-op movement visible

A state which is rated as one of the laggards so far as co-operative movement is concerned, is showing signs an awakening of the co-operative movement of late. You guessed it right we are talking of Jharkhand.

One of the reasons was ever since it got bifurcated from Bihar, co-op organizations were not as quick to separate out as the political and administrative systems did.

But now with the announcement of the election date of Jharakhand State Cooperative Bank, a beginning has been made. Jharakhand State Co-op Bank will elect a new board and the elections are scheduled for 19 November this year.

The nomination and scrutiny will be done on 29th and 30th October 2018. The withdrawal will be on 5 November. The polling will be organized on 19th November if needed and result will be announced soon after the polling.

Presently, Bank is under administrator control. It is noted that the BOD will be formed for the first time after the formation of state. There are 136 voters who will access their voting rights.

Jharkhand has no state cooperative union in the state. A BJP ruled state it stands at the bottom with just 17 thousand co-ops in the co-op profiling done by apex co-op body NCUI.

Profiling of cooperatives in the country revealed a massive surge in the number of cooperatives in the country-from 6.10 lakhs to 7.35 lakhs but for Jharkhand the movement has been non-starter so far

The profiling has also thrown up some interesting points such as Maharashtra piping every other state at the post when it comes to the maths of viable co-operatives. It has the highest number touching a figure of 2.46 lakhs – way ahead of others.

Gujarat which is often held as a state studded with coops has mere 62 thousand; it is behind Telangana which has 65 thousand viable cooperatives. Bihar is ahead in terms of the number of cooperatives of both Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. While Bihar has 39 thousand , UP and MP have 34 and 38 thousand respectively.

Interestingly, Jharkhand has contributed NAFCUB Vice-President in Rambabu Shandilya who also acted as its President while Mehta-Abhaynkar spat was going on.
