Is Patnaik govt avoiding co-op elections?

Sri Naveen PatnaikThe Navin Patnaik govt in Odisha is still frittering time away on cooperative elections. The lingering indecision is atrocious in that the cooperative vote should have been held long ago.

The Odisha cooperative societies (amendment) Act 2012 came into force already in 2013. What is worse, even after amending the Odisha cooperative societies rules (1965, 1991) for holding elections the govt has been procrastinating the matter.

A senior Odisha BJP leader has said the state govt. is simply brazening it out on the issue. The matter was raised in the recent session of the state assembly and opposition members criticized the govt. for not observing the constitutional provisions.

Sources say as most of the cooperative bodies are being controlled by the ruling party’s leaders, the govt keeps dawdling citing one excuse or another.
