In a major transition at the helm of the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO), the world’s leading fertilizer cooperative, K J Patel has been appointed as the new Managing Director, succeeding the legendary Dr. Udai Shanker Awasthi, who superannuated on July 31, 2025, after an illustrious career spanning nearly four decades.
IFFCO Chairman Dileepbhai Sanghani formally announced the appointment during a press conference held on Thursday at IFFCO’s headquarters, marking a new chapter in the cooperative’s rich legacy.
K J Patel brings with them a wealth of experience in the fertilizer and cooperative sectors and is expected to carry forward IFFCO’s legacy of innovation, farmer empowerment, and global excellence. He holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Saurashtra University and has over 32 years of rich experience in the maintenance of nitrogenous and phosphatic fertiliser plants.
He is recognized for his strong track record in driving operational excellence and sustainable growth. He previously headed the IFFCO Paradeep Plant, the largest complex fertiliser plant in India.
Dr. Awasthi, a towering figure in Indian agriculture and the cooperative movement, had served as IFFCO’s Managing Director since 1993. Under his visionary leadership, IFFCO scaled unprecedented heights, establishing international joint ventures, launching revolutionary nano fertilizers, and transforming into a global cooperative powerhouse.
Speaking on the occasion, IFFCO Chairman Dileep Sanghani said, “We extend a warm welcome to K J Patel as the new MD. We are confident that under their leadership, IFFCO will continue its journey of excellence and service to Indian farmers. At the same time, we deeply thank Awasthi ji for his unmatched dedication, vision, and service.”
As the organization enters a new era, industry stakeholders, cooperative leaders, and millions of farmers will be closely watching IFFCO’s next steps under the leadership of K J Patel.
