India’s drive towards next-generation agriculture has received a significant boost with the Centre approving Nano NPK fertilisers developed by Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited under the Fertiliser Control Order (FCO). The government notification marks a major step in expanding the country’s portfolio of advanced nano nutrient solutions aimed at improving efficiency and sustainability in farming.
According to the notification, two formulations, Nano NPK Liquid (8-8-10) and Nano NPK Granular (20-10-10), have been approved for manufacture and use for an initial period of two years. These products join the growing list of nano fertilisers already notified, including Nano Urea and Nano DAP, further strengthening India’s transition toward precision agriculture.
The approval of Nano NPK is particularly noteworthy as it enables balanced delivery of the three primary plant nutrients, Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K), through advanced nano-scale technology. This is expected to address long-standing imbalances in fertiliser consumption patterns across Indian agriculture, where overuse of certain nutrients has often led to declining soil health and productivity.
Nano fertilisers, defined by particle sizes below 100 nanometres, are engineered to enhance nutrient use efficiency by ensuring targeted and gradual release. Compared to conventional fertilisers, they require smaller quantities, reduce wastage, and minimise environmental risks such as soil degradation and water contamination.
In an official statement, IFFCO described the approval as a defining milestone in its innovation journey. The cooperative highlighted that the newly approved Nano NPK formulations are indigenously developed and represent a global first in combining both foliar and basal application methods. While the liquid variant is designed for foliar spray, the granular version caters to soil application and root feeding, offering flexibility and precision in nutrient delivery.
The cooperative emphasised that these innovations are aimed at enhancing crop productivity, improving soil health, and reducing input costs for farmers. By lowering dependence on conventional chemical fertilisers, Nano NPK is also expected to contribute to environmentally sustainable farming practices.
Experts believe the development holds strategic importance in the current global context, where geopolitical uncertainties have disrupted fertiliser supply chains. By promoting domestic innovation and reducing reliance on imports, the move aligns with India’s broader vision of self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
With IFFCO’s extensive cooperative network spanning rural India, the rollout of Nano NPK fertilisers is expected to scale up rapidly. This could play a crucial role in modernising Indian agriculture, promoting balanced nutrient usage, and ensuring long-term sustainability.
The approval underscores a broader shift towards technology-driven farming, where efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and environmental stewardship are becoming central to agricultural policy and practice.
