In a major step toward strengthening scientific agriculture and cooperative innovation, Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) has joined hands with the Forest Research Institute (FRI), Dehradun, to undertake a significant research project focused on genetic improvement of neem.
The project, titled “Genetic Improvement of Azadirachta indica (Neem) for Development of Dwarf Genotypes and Production of Neem Products Rich in Active Ingredients,” was recently reviewed at a high-level meeting in Dehradun. The initiative aims to develop dwarf (compact) neem genotypes through advanced genetic research and to enhance the concentration of active compounds such as azadirachtin, the principal bioactive ingredient responsible for neem’s insecticidal properties.
India is home to a vast population of neem trees, and neem-based products have gained global recognition for their eco-friendly and bio-pesticidal characteristics. IFFCO has already played a pioneering role in promoting neem-coated urea, a reform introduced to improve nitrogen-use efficiency and curb diversion of subsidised urea.
The current collaboration seeks to build upon that foundation by creating scientifically improved neem planting material that is more productive, easier to manage and capable of yielding high-value derivatives.
The development of dwarf neem varieties is expected to help farmers adopt high-density plantations, simplify harvesting, and improve seed collection efficiency. Enhanced levels of active ingredients will also strengthen the production of superior neem-based bio-pesticides and plant protection products, supporting India’s broader shift toward sustainable and natural farming practices.
During the review meeting, experiences were shared from the tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he served as Chief Minister of Gujarat, particularly regarding initiatives to boost farmers’ prosperity, modernise agriculture, encourage innovation and accelerate the cooperative movement. The discussions underlined the importance of integrating scientific research with cooperative strength to empower farmers and ensure long-term agricultural sustainability.
FRI scientists Dr. Ashok Kumar, Dr. Ajay Thakur and Dr. Rama Kant welcomed the delegation and briefed participants on research progress. Among those present were NCUI Director Pradeep Kumar, IFFCO Director Umesh Tripathi, Marketing Director Yogendra Kumar, State Marketing Manager Satish Kumar and Agriculture Investment & Marketing Cooperative Society representative Varsha Goswami.
