Himachal Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh stressed on the need to strengthen the cooperative movement and said the government would explore the feasibility of including “cooperative movement” in social studies syllabus from class VII to X, reports Press Trust of India.

“Cooperative movement has been instrumental in providing various essential services to the people and new initiatives are being taken under diversification and expansion of activities of the cooperative societies, which includes filling up vacant posts and strengthening its infrastructure as well,” the chief minister said while presiding over the meeting of the State Cooperative.

The Chief Minister gave a nod of approval to filling up of 120 vacant posts of Inspectors in the Cooperative department and 60 vacant posts of clerks.

About 4,800 cooperative societies were functional in the state having more than 16 lakh members and working capital of over Rs 22,000 crore and hundred percent population had been covered under cooperatives and cooperative societies were assisting in marketing of agriculture produce, fertilizers, agriculture tools and other essential commodities to the people of the state, the chief minister added.

The Government would also consider exempting the cooperative societies from provision of Section 18 of the Tenancy and Land Reform Act and also to restrict the members outside the state in the cooperative societies, the chief minister announced.

According to the chief minister, 252 posts had been sanctioned for Kangra Central Cooperative Bank and the remaining vacant posts would soon be filled up.
