Delhi CHS creates history by electing all women MC

Young Friends CGHS- a housing cooperative society located in the posh suburb of Delhi called Rohini created history by electing unopposed an all women management committee. Young Friends is a group housing society of 57 members.

The new management team comprises of Mrs Sangeeta Gupta-President, Mrs Indira Dosaj-Vice President, Divya Agaarwal-treasurer and Mrs Ashima Gulia-secretary, among others.

All the elected women members have rich working experiences. While the President Mrs Sangeeta Gupta is a seasoned Income Tax official, Secretary Ashima Gulia is a Professor. Treasurer Divya Agaarwal is a retired Banker. Other management committee members are also well-educated and active members, said a resident of the society.

It is learnt that the idea of handing over the management of the society to women folk first germinated in the mind of Mr Sunil Kumar-the outgoing president of the society. Incidentally, Sunil is the serving Additional Managing Director of Nafed and has had the cooperative training as part of his job. He was also one of those who worked hard to rescue Nafed from Banks’ mounting debts successfully last week.

When Indian Cooperative contacted Sunil, he said that he had indeed requested the women members of the society to come forward to take over the reins of the society. “I am so happy that they came forward and their panel was elected unopposed”, he added.

The new President Sangeeta Gupta was also thankful to the outgoing management particularly the President for making the society freehold in spite of so many legal hurdles during its tenure. The society today boasts a well maintained park, CCTV and other facilities.

When asked about the challenges before the new team Mrs Gupta said “disciplined parking of the cars and recovery of the dues from some habitual defaulters of the society are some of the issues which the Management would like to take up immediately.”

Indian Cooperative lauds those who made all-women MC possible thereby rekindling the cooperative spirit among women. Empowerment of women through elections can barely be under-estimated. This may be a small story but its massage is loud and far-reaching. Kudos to the forward thinking members of the Young Friends CGHS!
