Cooperators hail Kovind as the new President

Indian cooperative fraternity has hailed the news of NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind being elected the country’s 14th president. Kovind received 65.6 per cent votes while Meira Kumar got 34.35 per cent. 522 MPs voted for Kovind, while 225 parliamentarians voted for Meira Kumar.

Sahakar Bharati Patron Shri Satish Marathe reacted to Indian Cooperative query seeking his reaction on Kovind’s election and said “A Gentleman President”. “Sahakar Bharati congratulates him on his election as the President”, Marathe added.

Putting Kovind’s smiling photograph on his twitter wall IFFCO MD Dr U S Awasthi said “Heartiest Congratulations to Shri Ramnath KovindJi for being elected as 14th President of India”.

Dr Mukund Abhyankar, senior cooperators from Pune had an interesting reaction, however; he said in a text message reply sent to us on Kovind’s election“Neither positive nor negative reaction. President of India has no role in any policy matters.”

Though NCUI President Dr Chandra Pal Singh Yadav was not accessible on phone, he had admired Kovind in his last interview given to this portal. “I know him since long and also know his commitment towards the have-nots of society”, Yadav who belongs to the neighbouring district of President-elect native home had said.

Indian Cooperative reported earlier in these columns that Ramnath Kovind is an untiring advocate of cooperatives and thinks it can play a major role in the uplift of the weaker sections of society.

Last year in a function of Biscomaun in Patna Kovind sat close to eight hours in a cooperative function and said cooperative can ameliorate the conditions of the poor in the country.

Kovind is the second Dalit leader after RK Narayanan to get to the top post. Prime Minister himself rushed to the residence of Dr Mahesh Sharma to greet the President-elect. He also released a 20 year old photograph with Kovind on social media on this occasion.

#RamNathKovind trended whole of Thursday in the second half as thousands of people rushed to greet him on his election. From CMs like Rupani to Khattar, to Cabinet ministers to small-time politicians-all were seen active on social media greeting the Prez-elect.

A humbled President elect thanked people by tweeting “Your Blessing Matters More; Thanks to the ppl Of Nation for enormous love on NDA.”

Pranab Mukherjee’s term is ending on July 24 and Kovind will take oath on 25th July.
