Change of guard in co-op sector in Maharashtra?

Ajit_PawarThe BJP’s win in the recent Maharashtra assembly vote has fueled speculation that the change of the guard will have wide-ranging consequences for the cooperative sector in the state as well. The reasons for this are not far to seek.

The BJP jolly well knows that the cooperative sector that wields a crucial influence in the party politics of the state needs to be controlled if the party is to stabilize itself as a long -term political player in Maharashtra.

Analysts say this will not only cause the dethronement of the Congress and the NCP – the traditional controllers of cooperative bodies in the state but also greatly broaden the scope for the BJP to dispense favours to its own party men.

There are thousands of cooperative organizations spread across the state and their combined financial transactions count a whopping Rs 1,73,800 crore.

Sources say scores of cooperative entities in Maharashtra are ailing and the new govt. in Mumbai would have to take urgent steps to bail them out of their crisis.
