100 Years of Solidarity: ULCCS celebrates its 100th Anniversary

Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS) completes 100 years today on 13th February.  This is not just an occasion for celebration, but a testament to the power of collective action and its potential to build a more equitable and just society.

Founded in 1925 by a group of cashew laborers in Kerala, ULCCS stands as a beacon of hope. Born from the struggles against exploitation and unfair wages, it championed the principles of worker ownership and democratic decision-making.

Starting with a single construction contract, ULCCS has grown into a behemoth, boasting over 7,500 completed projects and a diverse portfolio spanning infrastructure, manufacturing, and healthcare.

But ULCCS’s impact extends far beyond its economic success. It has empowered marginalized communities, providing employment opportunities, skill development, and social security to its worker-members. Its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility serves as a model for responsible business practices.

Looking back, the ULCCS journey is marked by milestones. Early years, braving skepticism, ULCCS secured its first contract, proving the viability of the worker-cooperative model. In the 1960s it embraced mechanization and diversification and expanded its footprint beyond construction.

In the 1980s ULCCS played a pivotal role in Kerala’s development, undertaking landmark projects like the Idukki Arch Dam and in the 2000s, it embraced innovation and social responsibility and ventured into new ventures while strengthening its commitment to workers’ welfare.

As ULCCS enters its second century, the future holds exciting possibilities. Plans for expansion beyond Kerala, international collaborations, and a focus on green technologies demonstrate its continued commitment to growth and progress.

But the core values of solidarity, empowerment, and social responsibility remain unshakeable. ULCCS serves as a powerful reminder that even in a world dominated by large corporations, alternative models that prioritize people over profit can thrive. It’s a beacon of hope, not just for workers in India, but for anyone seeking a more just and equitable world.

The ULCCS story is not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about human agency, resilience, and the unwavering belief in building a better future together.
