Fishermen Cooperative Federation to protest

Hundreds of fishermen under the banner of Bihar State Fishermen Cooperative Federation would hold demonstration before the state assembly on July 20 to

press for settlement of Jalkars in Bihar through the newly-constituted Ad-hoc committees.

Federation President Rakesh Kumar Nishad, talking to reporters here, accused the state government of acting on the advice of ruling JD(U) MP Capt Jai Narayan Nishad.

“If the state government fails to ensure settlement of jalkars through the newly-constituted adhoc committees, the fishermen across the state would assemble here and hold demonstration on July 20”, he said.

Nishad said in the event of the government failing to concede the demand, the fishermen would burn the effigies including that of the JD(U) MP across the state on July 30

and further intensify the stir.

The Federation leader further said the Fishery Jalkar Management Act 2005 which was amended in 2010 had provisions of giving  power to the newly-registered Adhoc  Committees for ensuring settlement of jalkars across the state for next seven years from 2011-12.

“But the state Animal and Fishery Resources department violated the provisions and issued an order on June 30 stating that those committees or pattedars who used to have the benefit of the settlement of jalkars will continue to enjoy the previous facility”, he alleged and said the decision had forced the fishermen to take recourse to agitation.
