Fishcopfed: MD vows to fulfil PM’s dream of Blue Revolution

Fishcopfed Managing Director B.K.Mishra met Union minister of state for animal husbandry, dairying and fisheries and MSME Pratap Sarangi at Krishi Bhawan on Wednesday and discussed several issues related to the fishery cooperative sector.

Soon after his meeting with the Minister, Mishra shared some details of the meeting with Indian Cooperative correspondent. According to Mishra, though it was a courtesy visit a proposal was presented to the minister who showed a great interest in it. The meeting lasted for almost an hour, Mishra informed.

“I gave the minister a broad overview of the present scenario of the fishery cooperative sector and apprised him of the reasons responsible for the underdevelopment of the sector. There is a need to offer fish insurance on the lines of crop insurance to strengthen the fish farmers of the country, Mishra said while sharing the details of the meeting.

Fishcopfed MD Mishra told the minister that if the dream of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ushering in the blue revolution till 2022 is to be realized the fishery cooperative sector needs to be strengthened.

Mishra was extremely happy that the . Minister listened to his concerns patiently and asked him to submit a brief representation highlighting the necessity of fish crop insurance. Mishra said he would prepare a note and submit it to the minister in a couple of days”, Mishra remarked.

The Fishcopfed M D also informed the minister that in the last financial year 2018-19 fishcopfed provided insurance cover under a PMSBY policy through Oriental Insurance Company Ltd to 30,39,374 fishermen from 24 states and 5 Union Territories.

Mishra also took the opportunity of congratulating Rajeev Ranjan an IAS officer who has recently assumed office as Union Secretary in the Department of Fisheries. He is from the Tamil Nadu cadre,1985 batch officer.

It bears recalling that the federation failed to get service charges of Rs 2 crore from the govt which has been pending for the past seven years.

Fishcopfed has its offices in states like Assam, Bihar, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu.

There are more than 18,000 Primary Fishermen Cooperative Societies as its members and around 30 lakh fishermen are associated with Fishcopfed.
