The proposed National Cooperative policy which is expected to be unveiled any time now, is to be presented before the state holders for any last-minute addition or deletion of points. There were media speculations that NCP would be announced around Diwali but the release, perhaps, got somewhat delayed due to the assembly elections in the four states.

A regional workshop on drafting a New Cooperative Policy is scheduled for 21st November 2023 (Tuesday) at LINAC, Gurugram, which will be chaired by the National Cooperative Policy Committee Chairman Suresh Prabhu.

The meeting has been organized for the states falling in two zones-Northern and Central for seeking stakeholders’ view on the draft of the new national cooperative policy. Besides, the Convenors of the subcommittees formed within the National Cooperative Policy Panel tasked with working on different themes will also be present.

It is said that this kind of workshop will also be organized for other zones as well. Pune based cooperative institution Vamnicom’s team under the leadership of its director-Hema Yadav is looking after things in this regard.

National Co-operative Policy is something the Ministry has been nursing the ambition to offer to the country and the co-op sector since the beginning of its existence. Cutting across states and boundaries, the new policy would broadly lay the foundation of a robust cooperative movement.

To achieve this goal, the Ministry has ensured that there is representation of members from all the states of the country in the Draft Committee. The new National Cooperative Policy aims at preparing the roadmap for cooperatives for the next 25 years.

“The policy will have the potential of changing the socio-economic dimension of India, substantially increasing the share of cooperatives in the total GDP. The idea behind the policy is to promote a cooperative-based economic development model backed by a legal and institutional framework”, said Dileep Sanghani talking to the Indian Cooperative.

The key recommendations include structural reforms & governance, cooperatives as vibrant economic entities, level playing field for cooperatives, sources of capital and funds, inclusion of priority sections, use of technology, upskilling and training, sustainability and implementation plan. The aim of the NCP would be to achieve the PM’s vision of Sahakar se Samriddhi”.

It bears recalling that last month Suresh Prabhu and NCUI Chairman Dileep Sanghani met Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah with an aim to update the minister on the progress of the draft report.
