GPC & NAFED commemorate World Pulses Day with grand event

Celebrating the significant contributions of pulses to global food security and sustainable agriculture, the Global Pulse Confederation (GPC) and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) marked World Pulses Day with a remarkable event at the Taj Palace Hotel.

World Pulses Day, designated by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on February 10 each year, serves as a platform to highlight the nutritional benefits and environmental sustainability of pulses.

This year’s theme, “Nourishing soils and people,” underscored the crucial role of pulses in promoting soil health and addressing malnutrition.

At a press conference coinciding with the commencement of the GPC’s Pulses24 convention, esteemed speakers including GPC President Vijay Iyengar, Sunil Kumar Singh from NAFED, and Clay Hamilton, Agricultural Ambassador of the USA, shared insights and perspectives on the importance of pulses in global agriculture and nutrition.

Vijay Iyengar emphasized the pivotal role of pulses in bolstering agrifood systems, stating, “Pulses boost soil health, rebalancing and revitalizing soils while providing nutrient-rich sustenance, greater yields, and increased food security.” He called upon stakeholders to champion the cause of pulses and promote their consumption and production worldwide.

Sunil Kumar Singh echoed this sentiment, urging collective action to increase pulse production and consumption. He emphasized the need for sustainability in agriculture to address food security challenges and combat malnutrition.

Clay Hamilton underscored the growing demand for healthy, sustainable food products in India and stressed the importance of strengthening the market for pulses. He commended the efforts of GPC and NAFED in promoting sustainability and healthy diets.

The GPC Pulses24 convention, running from February 14 to 17, 2024, promises to be a transformative event for the pulses industry, gathering experts and stakeholders to discuss strategies for enhancing the role of pulses in global food systems.

As World Pulses Day celebrations continue worldwide, the event in New Delhi serves as a reminder of the critical importance of pulses in achieving food security, promoting sustainable agriculture, and addressing global nutrition challenges.
