What if MC members are not interested?

Aamol Chaudhary

I am a member of the managing committee of my society. Most of the MC members do not take any interest in the running of society and do not even come to any meeting. They are ready to resign. The elections are due in 2016. Please do let me know whether it is possible to conduct the elections before 2016. We want a new MC who can actively contribute in the welfare of society.

I C Naik

Aamol Chaudhary is presumably a sincere member of the managing committee registered in the State of Maharashtra. As elections are due next year, the managing committee has served more than half of the term (most members willy-nilly). Aamol’s idea is laudable as he wants a vibrant committee in place of almost a sleeping one. It is no less an opportune time when the Cooperative Movement is poised to a big leap in terms of democratic autonomous functioning post the Constitution ( 97th Amendment ) Act 2011.

Very serious but simple steps are suggested.

Put up a Notice inviting all members to suggest names of members who in their opinion are most suited to become members of the managing committee (including one’s own name). They may be asked to suggest as many names as is the strength of the present the managing committee as per Bye-laws less 1 (as you are continuing).

Identify names of those who are preferred the most.

Then hold 2-3 successive meetings of the managing committee (make sure 3 clear days notices are issued for every meeting). Let a certain member resign in the first meeting leaving number equal to quorum for the next meeting. Co-opt equal number to fill up casual vacancy in place of those who resigned. So turn by turn all (but Aamol) go out and new come in. So you have a new Committee.

In an extreme eventuality of non-cooperation from a large number of members of existing managing committee make sure you have with you one existing member on board at least for one meeting in the minimum.

Two of you are good enough to convene a meeting of the managing committee and accept resignations of all but two of you and co-opt equal number. If you know of a person well versed in law finance banking etc (may not bea member) co-opt him/her as expert member in addition to strength as per Bye-Laws. You can hve 2 such members on the committee but they can not become office bearers nor can they vote for any member of the managing committee to be voted in as office bearer,

I am sure you can revamp your committee quite soon effortlessly and in a cooperative way.

BEST OF LUCK. THIS IS A PROVEN AND TRIED APPROACH.
