Unati co-op: Changing cooperative

Jyoti Saroop

We are the Unati Co-op. Marketing-cum-Processing Society Ltd. Talwara, Distt Hoshaitpur Punjab. The society came into existence with efforts of technically qualified friends to support the people of Kandi area, a backward belt of Punjab. With our technical expertise we initially worked like NGO with governmental aided project and later take over a processing facility established by Punjab State Council for Science and Technology to process Natural Bioresources of Kandi Area like Amla, Jamun, Aloe vera etc in 2007.

With hard work of Society we have taken it to big height with healthy turnover. We have not taken any share from the Government or any bank loan or support of any state or central Financial Institution or collected any public money. Whatever we have achieved we have achieved with hard work of team. We have generated lot of funds for our community members and our selves.

In the initial stage there was no departmental interference in our operation but as the society came into limelight the departmental interference started increasing which is hindering our growth. The team who is working is not able to get any remuneration from society because act and rules does not permit. We formed this society to create employment for our community as well as we the management people. But society by laws does not permit us to give nay honarium to member of management committee.

My question is can we shift our society to self regulatory cooperative society in Punjab or how we can give financial remuneration to active members who are also part of management committee.

It is unfortunate that such successful Cooperative Institution is being harassed by the Government, but that is the way they operated for over half a century. After 97th Constitutional Amendment these practices have to go undoubtedly. It will take some time but more important is members’ unity against such wrongdoers.

There are workers’ societies and there Agricultural Produce Societies for example Sugar Cooperatives. Their members are Sugarcane growers who sell their produce to Sugar Mills. In fact members are duty bound to sell to the society of which they are members. Your Society’s members are putting in their labour for which they are paid for. These payments are not as member’s right but a compensation for services rendered. May be you need to amend the Bye Laws suitably to remove the restrictions if any on member rendering service for fair compensation by the Society.

It is unfortunate that Cooperative Department is not guiding you properly.
