Yenepoya Study finds anti-Cancer potential in Arecanut: CAMPCO

A new scientific study by Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), Mangaluru, has brought encouraging news for arecanut growers. The research found that arecanut extracts exhibit potent in vitro anticancer activity, effectively inhibiting cancer cell proliferation, migration, and invasion while remaining non-toxic to normal cells.

The Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative Ltd. (CAMPCO) has welcomed the findings, calling them a significant contribution toward understanding the true potential of arecanut. CAMPCO President Shri A. Kishore Kumar Kodgi appreciated the initiative of Yenepoya University in conducting this important research.

He noted that the study assumes particular relevance following the World Health Organization’s recent classification of arecanut as carcinogenic. “Such research-based findings from reputed institutions bring a balanced and scientific perspective to the discussion on arecanut,” Kodgi said.

Earlier studies conducted by Nitte (Deemed to be University) and other organisations have also indicated that arecanut, when processed and used appropriately, may have cancer-curing properties rather than carcinogenic effects, supporting its long-standing traditional and cultural importance.

CAMPCO expressed confidence that such scientific validations will help protect the interests of lakhs of arecanut growers and counter misconceptions surrounding the crop. The organisation also extended appreciation to the scientists and administration of Yenepoya University for their contribution to this crucial field of study.
