Dr. Mukund Abhyankar, former Chairman of Cosmos Cooperative Bank, passed away on April 16, 2026, at the age of 89 due to age-related ailments, marking the end of an era in the co-operative banking movement.
A stalwart of the sector, Dr. Abhyankar was associated with Cosmos Bank’s Board of Directors for over 46 years, beginning his journey in 1978. During his long and distinguished tenure, he served as Chairman nine times, playing a pivotal role in steering the bank’s growth, modernization, and expansion.
Beyond Cosmos Bank, Dr. Abhyankar made significant contributions at the national level. He served as Chairman of NAFCUB, where he worked tirelessly for the development and strengthening of urban co-operative banks across India. His leadership and vision earned him respect across the co-operative fraternity.
An academician as well, Dr. Abhyankar held the position of Dean at University of Pune and was an active member of various committees of the Reserve Bank of India. He also maintained close associations with several social and community organizations, contributing to public life beyond banking.
He is survived by his wife, son, daughter-in-law, daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren. His mortal remains were kept for homage at Cosmos Bank’s head office, Cosmos Bhavan, on April 17 between 11:00 am and 11:30 am. The last rites were performed at Vaikunth Crematorium around noon.
Dr. Abhyankar’s demise is widely mourned across the co-operative banking sector, with colleagues and leaders remembering him as a visionary, institution builder, and a guiding force for generations.
