TN: Co-op banks delay in fulfilling CM’s promise

Times of India reports despite Tamil Nadu chief minister’s decision to waive crop loans, farmers in the delta region are in crisis because the cooperative banks have yet to implement the decision.

Sources say, farmers who had taken loans in 2007-2008 are still adjudged defaulters and are not eligible for new loans from the cooperative banks.

However, a source says the cooperative banks have not received any communication from higher authorities and they are therefore unable to unable to identify beneficiaries of the waiver and make it public.

Farmers were able to get around 23,000 loans for paddy and around 50,000 for sugarcane from cooperative banks. Now, they expect 30,000 for paddy and 60,000 for sugarcane. The cooperative banks have delayed the loan process citing the waiver.
