As of March 31, 2024, Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs) in India totaled 1,472 institutions. While Tier-I UCBs made up the majority at 850 banks (57.74%), it was the Tier-III category—though comprising just 78 banks—that led in terms of total deposits, advances, and assets.
Tier-III UCBs accounted for Rs 1.93 lakh crore in deposits (34.76%) and Rs 1.16 lakh crore in advances (33.48%), with total assets reaching Rs 2.39 lakh crore (33.81%).
Tier-II banks, numbering 538, contributed significantly with 30.79% of total deposits and 29.83% of advances. Interestingly, only 6 Tier-IV UCBs managed Rs 1.27 lakh crore in deposits and Rs 85,420 crore in advances, reflecting their massive individual scale. Overall, UCBs collectively held Rs 5.55 lakh crore in deposits, Rs 3.46 lakh crore in advances, and assets worth Rs 7.08 lakh crore.
These figures highlight a trend where fewer, larger UCBs are driving the sector’s financial muscle.
