Seemingly inspired by questionable considerations, the coalition govt in Mumbai has got the amended Maharashtra state cooperative societies Act passed by the state legislature allowing candidates with tainted background to seek elections to cooperative bodies, reports TOI.
The move reverses the amendment brought in the Act by the Devendra Fadnavis govt in 2016 disallowing tainted persons from fighting cooperative elections. Opposition leaders and social activists have criticised the move saying it will once again spark criminalization of the cooperative world in the state.
In 2011, when the Congress-NCP government was in power, RBI, on the recommendation of NABARD had superseded the MSC Bank board. The directors of the bank included then deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, and some other Congress and NCP leaders.
