Despite a soft package of Rs 3, 500 crore for sugar cooperatives and mills, announced by the center and the state govt. arrears of farmers in Uttar Pradesh stand at a whopping Rs 9,536 crore, reports Financial Express.
It is reported that cooperative sugar mills have crushed 932.14 lakh tonnes of cane by mid-April.
These coop mills still owe Rs. 526.12 crore arrears.
Despite the UP govt claiming most of the arrears have been paid to the farmers, the ground reality seems to be different in that the farmers remain still exercised over the issue of non-payment.
