In a significant push to strengthen the cooperative movement, the Government of Sikkim on Thursday launched the Sikkim State Cooperative Policy 2026, aimed at transforming cooperatives into engines of inclusive growth and rural prosperity.

The policy was unveiled at the Sikkim State Cooperative Union in the presence of Rural Development, Cooperation and Panchayati Raj Minister Arun Kumar Upreti, who termed it a “milestone” in building a progressive socio-economic framework.

Highlighting key features, Upreti said the policy focuses on governance reforms, financial sustainability, professionalism, and technology adoption. It also emphasises capacity building, transparency, and greater member participation to create self-reliant and people-centric institutions.

PRCS-cum-Secretary Jabi Thapa noted that the policy aligns with the national vision of “Sahakar Se Samriddhi” and contributes to the goal of Viksit Bharat @2047.

A presentation by Joint Registrar Rohit Rasaily outlined 19 objectives under six pillars, focusing on governance, performance, and institutional strengthening.

The event also saw the launch of a departmental magazine marking the International Year of Cooperatives 2025, a digital newsletter, and the rollout of the CORE inspection app to enhance cooperative data management.

The policy is expected to usher in a new era of sustainable, community-driven development in the state.
