RoC washes hands off unsecured deposits

The registrar of cooperative societies in Kerala has refused to accept responsibility for securing amounts being put in miscellaneous and welfare cooperatives across the state , a news outlet has reported.

Sometime ago the newspaper had revealed that there are many cooperatives collecting funds and conducting chitty under Monthly Deposit Schemes without the authorization of the competent authorities. The latter had, according to the report, pretended not to have any information about the illegal activities.

Only recently has the registrar put up a notice at its headquarters warning people against the dangers of the deposits not being secure. However, it defies explanation why the dept of cooperatives still shows a marked reluctance to take action against the erring cooperative societies.

By Additional Registrar’s own admission, the cooperative societies were indulging in illegal activities with the connivance of a section of cooperative officials, the report adds.

Official sources say police investigation has already begun against such a society in Kozhikode and more such steps are likely to be taken soon to check the illegal activities. The involvement of political leaders is also being suspected, officials point out.
