Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Bharat Ratna Dr. M.S. Swaminathan Centenary International Conference at Pusa, New Delhi, marking the agricultural pioneer’s birth centenary.
The August 7–9 event, themed ‘Evergreen Revolution – The Path to Bio-Happiness’, is jointly organised by the Ministry of Agriculture, ICAR, the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, and the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan praised Dr. Swaminathan’s lifelong service to farmers and the nation, noting his resolve after witnessing the Bengal famine to eradicate hunger.
Recalling the 1966 introduction of Mexican wheat seeds crossbred in Punjab, he credited Swaminathan with boosting India’s wheat output from 5 to 17 million tonnes in a year, ushering in the Green Revolution.
Chouhan vowed to follow his vision to ensure food security for all, emphasising that “living for others is the real essence of life.”
